Mysterious Campaign Backs Patrice Motsepe for ANC Leadership

Political positioning within South Africa appears to be accelerating well before the next national election. An online initiative has emerged advocating for billionaire businessman Patrice Motsepe to become the next leader of the ruling African National Congress.

Although the country’s general election remains several years away, the ANC is expected to select a successor to President Cyril Ramaphosa next year, as he approaches the end of his second and final term. The appearance of a dedicated website praising Motsepe’s credentials suggests that internal contestation may already be underway.

Profile of a Potential Contender

Motsepe, aged 64, is widely known as a mining magnate and currently serves as president of the Confederation of African Football. Supporters behind the digital campaign describe him as a figure capable of uniting party factions and providing strategic leadership during a period of political uncertainty.

Despite the promotional effort, Motsepe himself has not publicly endorsed the initiative. In the past, he has consistently stated that he does not seek political office within the ANC hierarchy.

Questions Over Campaign Origins

The source of the online campaign remains unclear. No organization or individual has formally claimed responsibility for launching the website or coordinating its messaging.

The ANC has responded cautiously, issuing a reminder that internal party rules prohibit premature campaigning for leadership positions. The statement signals concern that unofficial promotions could disrupt established processes.

As succession debates gather momentum, the situation highlights growing anticipation over who will shape the ANC’s direction in the post-Ramaphosa era—and whether figures from outside traditional party structures may attempt to enter the contest.
