Ontology Crypto: Trust Layer For Web3 Identity And Data

arrow

Ontology is a high-throughput public blockchain and collaboration layer for Web3 that creates a decentralized, verifiable environment for digital identity and data. It also has a native cryptocurrency token, Ont, which is used to participate in network governance and help align incentives across the Ontology ecosystem. By emphasizing security, integrity, and trust, it enables reliable data sharing and efficient cooperation across the network.

Founded in 2017, Ontology focuses on self-sovereign identity and data. It delivers a performant public chain with decentralized identity capabilities, plus distributed ledgers and smart contract tooling for varied applications.

Overview

arrow

Ontology operates as a multi-chain, multi-system framework adopted across industries and regions, mapping information between independent chains and traditional information systems. It processes transactions through a Byzantine-fault-tolerant, proof-of-stake-style consensus design (Vbft) and supports interoperability via cross-chain communication features intended to connect independent networks and existing systems. Often called the Ontology Chain Group or Ontology Chain Network, it functions as connective tissue between blockchains.

The platform can launch customized public chains for specific use cases while supporting broader public blockchain systems. With coordinated protocol suites, its modular identity-and-data focus, customizable chain deployments, and cross-system interoperability are key differentiators compared to many general-purpose blockchains.

Ontology emphasizes verifiable identity and policy-aware data exchange as core primitives, aiming to make interoperability practical for real services rather than treating it as an add-on.

At the base layer, it offers reusable modules for common distributed scenarios such as digital identity, data exchange, and permissions. In practice, these building blocks can also support use cases like enterprise data coordination, credential-based onboarding, compliance-aware sharing of records, supply-chain traceability, and application authentication across multiple networks.

History of Ontology

arrow

Introduced in 2017 by Onchain, the project sought to capture the full benefits of blockchain networks. While the first wave of cryptocurrencies emphasized building decentralized money, this third-generation effort centers on improving interactions across blockchains and applications; the second wave largely addressed early shortcomings.

Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang spearheaded the initiative, engaging public agencies to highlight blockchain’s advantages. Zhang’s prior work on Orca Digital Inclusive (established in 2005) and their industry expertise strengthened investor confidence in the project’s trajectory.

Ontology began with Ont issued as a Nep-5 token on the Neo blockchain. Following the mainnet launch on June 30, 2018, holders migrated from Nep-5 Ont to native Ont.

Onchain also created Neo, a well-known smart contract platform often nicknamed the “Chinese Ethereum” due to its origins and goals comparable to Ethereum.

Ontology did not conduct a public initial coin offering; instead, it completed a private sale to select investors.

To broaden distribution, the team used an airdrop to deliver free Ont to Neo token holders and to subscribers of its email list.

Ont Id

arrow

Ont Id is a decentralized identity framework that uses blockchain and cryptography to connect people, data, and services.

It is designed to support portable identity verification across applications while keeping verification workflows verifiable on-chain.

  • Individuals control their digital identity and personal data.
  • Blockchain improves data verifiability and trust.
  • Privacy safeguarded with cryptography and chain-based security.
  • Trust anchors linked to build a verifiable trust network.

When sharing identity with external services, users submit cryptographic proofs instead of full credentials—akin to a notary’s attestation but without revealing the underlying documents.

Accredited Trust Anchors within the Ontology ecosystem provide credential verification for Ont Id users and receive Ont as compensation.

Robust cryptographic protocols secure these attestations against tampering, addressing forgery risks inherent to traditional signatures.

For developers, this enables fast, privacy-preserving user verification in digital products without handling sensitive documents such as passports.

Founders

arrow

Da Hongfei is best known for co-founding the blockchain “Smart Economy” project Neo with Erik Zhang in 2014. Educated at South China University of Technology in technology and English, he worked in consulting until 2013, learned to code, then launched Neo. Alongside Zhang, he also co-founded Onchain, a commercial blockchain company serving private enterprises.

Jun Li holds a bachelor’s in Computer Science, a master’s in Communication Engineering, a master of business administration, and a project management credential. With 16 years of information technology and fintech experience, he has led architecture, management, and planning for major global tech firms and Chinese financial exchanges, designing large-scale systems, forming new teams, and aligning technology with financial industry needs.

Ontology Token Economics

Ontology employs a dual-token model—Ont and Ong—to support network governance and day-to-day operations.

This separation of roles is designed to serve a multi-chain ecosystem with diverse economic and interoperability requirements. In general terms, Ont represents participation and decision-making in the network, while Ong is used to cover execution costs, with Ong typically produced through network activity tied to Ont holdings and participation.

TokenPurposeUse Cases
OntGovernance and network participationStaking or locking for node participation. Voting on governance parameters. Alignment of incentives for ecosystem participants.
OngOperational token for network usagePaying transaction and smart contract execution fees. Fuel for on-chain actions and application interactions. Economic unit used in day-to-day network operations.

Ont Price History: Key Trends

arrow

Since its mainnet launch in 2018, Ont’s price performance has generally moved in cycles alongside broader crypto market conditions, with periods of rapid appreciation during risk-on phases and deeper drawdowns when liquidity tightens. Like many altcoins, its volatility has tended to be influenced by overall market sentiment, exchange liquidity, and ecosystem activity rather than by any single feature or release.

Ont as an Investment: Potential Factors and Risks

arrow

Ont’s investment appeal is commonly evaluated through its technology focus (identity, data, and interoperability), adoption signals (real usage of identity tooling, developer activity, and ecosystem integrations), and broader market trends affecting mid-cap blockchain assets. Key risks typically include competitive pressure from other identity and interoperability projects, changing exchange support and liquidity, smart contract and protocol security risks, and the high volatility that can affect smaller crypto assets disproportionately.
