Somali President Condemns Israel’s Somaliland Recognition at Doha Event

President Mohamud described Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as reckless, arguing that it undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and disregards established international norms. He warned that such actions risk encouraging political fragmentation in already fragile regions.

According to the Somali leader, the implications go far beyond Somalia, affecting the Red Sea corridor and international commerce that depends on stability in the Horn of Africa.

Gaza Conflict Raised as Global Moral Test

During the same address, Mohamud spoke forcefully about the war in Gaza, characterising it as an extreme example of inhumanity in modern history. He urged the international community to keep civilian suffering in Gaza at the top of the global agenda, regardless of competing geopolitical crises.

He linked the Gaza situation to broader concerns about accountability, justice, and respect for international law.

Somaliland’s Long-Standing Dispute

Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 during the collapse of the central government and years of civil war. While the region has built its own political institutions and maintained relative stability, it remained diplomatically unrecognised for more than three decades.

Israel’s decision last December made it the first country to formally recognise Somaliland, triggering strong opposition from Mogadishu. Somalia insists that Somaliland’s status must be resolved internally and within the framework of a unified state.

Somalia’s Security Battle Beyond Its Borders

Mohamud also highlighted Somalia’s ongoing military campaign against extremist groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State. He said Somalia’s fight against militancy serves not only national interests but also contributes to wider regional and global security.

Since returning to office in 2022, the president has pursued an aggressive strategy against armed groups responsible for years of deadly attacks. He concluded by calling on the international community to support Somalia’s sovereignty, security efforts, and territorial integrity, warning that unilateral actions could worsen instability across the region.
