Protesters in Johannesburg Demand Release of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Johannesburg over the weekend, marching to the United States consulate to voice opposition to Washington’s actions in Venezuela and to demand the release of former president Nicolas Maduro. The demonstration reflected growing political tension over international intervention and foreign policy in the region.

The march was peaceful and organized, drawing participation from political groups and labor organizations aligned with left-wing movements in South Africa.

Trade Unions Lead Demonstrations

The protest was spearheaded by members of the South African Communist Party alongside several major trade unions. Union leaders said they formally submitted a memorandum to the US consulate condemning what they described as an unlawful military operation in Venezuela.

Speakers at the rally emphasized respect for international law, sovereignty, and human rights. They argued that Venezuela’s natural resources, particularly oil, should serve as a means for cooperation and peace rather than conflict.

Calls for International Solidarity

Union representatives and activists used the protest to express solidarity with the Venezuelan people, pledging continued support until Maduro and other detained figures are released. They framed the issue as part of a broader struggle against foreign intervention and what they described as imperial aggression.

Messages delivered during the rally highlighted concerns about the precedent set by external military involvement in sovereign nations and its impact on global stability.

Political Backing and Diplomatic Strain

South Africa’s governing party has also publicly criticized US actions in Venezuela, aligning itself with the protesters’ demands. Senior party officials praised the role of workers and unions in mobilizing support and framing the protest as an act of international solidarity.

Relations between South Africa and the United States have been strained in recent months, following sharp exchanges between the two governments. The Johannesburg protest followed a similar demonstration held earlier this month outside the US embassy in Pretoria, signaling sustained opposition and ongoing diplomatic friction.
