The 2026 edition of the prestigious Mining Indaba conference has officially begun in Cape Town, drawing policymakers, investors and industry executives from across the continent and beyond. This year’s gathering is guided by the theme “Stronger Together,” highlighting cooperation as a foundation for the future of Africa’s mining industry.
Since its inception in 1994, the annual forum has served as a platform for shaping strategy, attracting capital and encouraging sustainable development in one of Africa’s most important economic sectors.
Leadership voices call for African ownership
Delivering the keynote address, Hakainde Hichilema, President of Zambia, urged African governments to take greater control of their economic planning. He emphasized that development strategies should originate within African nations themselves, with institutions such as the International Monetary Fund playing a supportive rather than directive role.
His remarks centered on strengthening domestic policy frameworks and ensuring that financial partnerships reflect national priorities.
Africa-first approach to resource management
Echoing the message of unity and self-determination, Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, stressed that African nations must defend their strategic interests in global trade. He argued that resource-rich countries should approach international agreements with a clear focus on long-term national benefit.
The conference, hosted in Cape Town, continues to position itself as a catalyst for responsible investment and inclusive growth. By bringing together governments, mining companies and financial institutions, Mining Indaba aims to strengthen collaboration and unlock sustainable value across the continent’s vast mineral wealth.
