As Ramadan approaches, charitable organizations across Egypt are intensifying preparations to support households facing financial hardship. Among them, the Misr ElKheir Foundation has launched a large-scale campaign aimed at delivering food assistance to millions of people during the holy month.
Volunteers gather daily at packing centers to assemble essential food parcels tailored to the needs of low-income families. The initiative seeks to ensure that households observing the fast have access to basic staples throughout the month.
Coordinated effort months in the making
Organizers explain that planning for the Ramadan drive begins well in advance. Multiple departments—from logistics and procurement to field operations—coordinate to secure supplies and distribute aid efficiently across the country.
This year, the foundation aims to reach approximately seven million individuals. According to its leadership, achieving that target requires months of preparation, partnerships with suppliers and the support of hundreds of volunteers working across Egypt.
Participants in the effort describe the experience as both meaningful and demanding, noting that each year the contents of the food packages are adjusted to reflect current economic conditions and household needs.
Rising costs weigh on families
In Cairo, many residents say that preparing for Ramadan has become increasingly difficult due to inflation. Traditional purchases, including “yamish”—a mixture of dried fruits, nuts and dates commonly bought before the fasting period—have become significantly more expensive.
Families accustomed to generous holiday preparations report cutting back on quantities this year. Despite the financial strain, many households remain committed to preserving the spirit of Ramadan, which emphasizes generosity, reflection and communal solidarity.
A month of faith and community
Ramadan is marked by daily fasting from dawn until sunset, followed by evening meals shared with relatives and neighbors. For charities like Misr ElKheir, the season represents an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and provide practical relief to those most affected by economic pressures.
Through coordinated food distribution and volunteer engagement, the foundation hopes its campaign will ease the burden on struggling families and help maintain the sense of unity that defines the holy month.
